Obra Social Caja Madrid

  • Marine turtle reproduction studies - Obra Social Caja Madrid Project

The aim of the project, financed by the Obra Social Caja Madrid, is to establish a breeding program.

  • Sharks and rays: Contribution to the preservation of these species and regulation of their fishing

For centuries, humans have catched sharks in a sustainable manner, through traditional fishing techniques. The overwhelming industrialization of the fishing industry, especially during the second half of the 20th century, has led to a current overexploitation of many shark populations.

  • Diminishing the accidental catch of marine turtles in trawls: Turtle Excluder Devices (TED)

For years, researchers in different parts of the world have been developing selective systems which can be applied to trawls, with the aim to reduce the mortality rates of marine turtles. The most widespread systems are the Turtle Excluder Devices (TED), a grid made of bars that diverts the marine turtles caught in the trawls to an scaping gap located in the upper or lower part of the trawl.

The marine turtle populations are dwindling because they are endangered by threats like pollution, loss of habitats and interaction with fishing devices, which causes them to be caught accidentally.

ESTRELLA DAMM

  • • Turtles

Estrella Damm has designed an awareness-raising campaign on the threats faced by the Mediterranean Sea and has also participated in Tortugas (Turtles), a project devoted to the rehabilitation of injured animals aboard the fishing vessels, so that they can be treated on the spot and returned inmediately to their habitat.

FUNDACION BIODIVERSIDAD

  • A favor de la biodiversidad, un mar de esperanza (A sea of hope to protect the biodiversity)

The project A favor de la biodiversidad, un mar de esperanza is an awareness-raising campaign designed to protect the endangered marine biodiversity and aimed at the whole population. The main goals are to let people know about the threats faced by the marine life and to share the conservation projects in place to protect and preserve it, both from the public administrations and the non-governmental organizations.
