The VELL MARÍ
The Vell Marí is a boat built in 1980 and acquired by the CRAM Foundation at the end of 2004. It is one of the few sailorboats used for marine exploration.
It has a ketch rigging (sailboat with two masts, where mast-head is higher than the stern one). Vell Mari measures 17 meters in length (distance from prow to stern) and 4.4 meters in beam (maximum width of the boat). The boat is ready for overseas shipping and has a capacity for twelve people spread over 4 rooms.
Vell Marí allow diversifying the CRAM Foundation projects developed for the study and preservation of our sea’s biodiversity, that’s why it has a high-tech equipment to explore the depths, to rescue and restore endangered marine life and to carry out conservation actions on protected ecosystems.
Apart from the scientific activity, Vell Marí is used as a learning platform that shows the state of conservation of marine biodiversity and the environmental challenges faced by the Spanish coastline.
The Pacific is single motor sailboat with one single mast of 10 meters in length and 2.70 meters in width equipped to navigate the entire year in bad conditions in the area of the continental shelf. It was built in Denmark shipyards and designed for navigation in the North Sea, therefore has a round stern, tough, and a very heavy and sturdy structure. Besides it has been equipped with a turret for indoor piloting.
The boat was hired to CRAM in 2007 and has capacity for five people. When it arrived to the Foundation, was endowed with the structure to use hydrophone and diving platform.
The Pacific has been involved in bioacoustics campaigns, transects and sightings and sea turtles reintroduction. Its structure ready for diving has been very useful in the seagrass monitoring.
